Best Australian Standing Desks of 2017

By Dr Peter Moore (GP)

Pick the person that most closely relates to you:

1. Multi Desker: I work from multiple locations

Kogan ZestDesk
Model Laptop & monitor stand Original
Less than AUD$600 Y Y
Split level to raise screen N Y
Tabletop area 28cm W x 42cm D 64cm W x 60cm D
Weight capacity N/A 16kg

Recommendation: If you are using it as your day-to-day desk then you need the ability to get your screen up to eye level (to avoid craning your neck). Additional space helps reduce leaning when trying to read or write. Winner: ZestDesk

2. One Desker: I do all of my work from the same desk

Officeworks Varidesk ikea
Model Wynston Large Pro Plus 36 Bekkant
Less than AUD$600 Y Y N
Motorised v Manual Manual Manual Motorised
Split level to raise screen Y Y N
Tabletop area 95cm W x 52cm D 91cm W x 76cm D 120cm W x 80cm D
Weight capacity 40kg 16kg 100kg

Recommendation: If you are on a budget & don't mind a lower quality desk then the officeworks model would be a good entry model. If you are prepared to spend a bit more we would recommend investing in the ikea electric standing desk. It is stronger, bigger and has a greater range of adjustments to ensure correct ergonomics. Overall winner: ikea Bekkant desk

3. The Anti Desker: I work from different locations around the house

Kogan ZestDesk
Model Laptop & monitor stand Original
Less than AUD$600 Y Y
Split level to raise screen N Y
Tabletop area 28cm W x 42cm D 64cm W x 60cm D
Weight capacity N/A 16kg

Recommendation: If you are using it for less than 30 minutes at a time then you can get away with the Kogan model. If you are using it for longer than 30 minutes you need the ability to get your screen up to eye level (to avoid craning your neck). Winner: ZestDesk

Other considerations
A couple of other things to keep in mind when you choosing a standing desk:

  1. A standing desk is an investment in your health. If you buy a high quality product you should have it for years and it will quickly pay itself off through less visits to health professionals (Physios, Chiros and GPs).
  2. In most offices I go into, the sit stand desks are permanently set on “sit” mode i.e. people are no longer using the stand function - it is hard to break the habit of lifetime of sitting! If you can, leave your desk on stand mode and use a stool when you get tired legs. Perching on a stool takes around 50% of the weight off your legs & is overall better than sitting.

I started ZestDesk in order to have the biggest impact on reducing back pain from sitting. If you are genuine about making a change I can offer you a one off discount on a ZestDesk.

Please use the code below for USD$50 (approx. AUD$65) off when you buy a ZestDesk, it is valid for the next 5 days only.
